What’s New

Lawrenceville, NJ (December 5, 2013)—Taft and Partners, an award-winning marketing communications firm based near Princeton, NJ, is proud to announce the launch of ClearPoint, a new division focused exclusively on improving the communication skills of leaders and aspiring leaders. ClearPoint was born out of Taft’s 30 years’ experience with Fortune 500 companies, and its methods draw on extensive empirical research.

The launch of ClearPoint comes at a time when executive coaching is in demand. According to a survey conducted by the Stanford Graduate School of Business and The Miles Group, fully 100% of CEOs said they are receptive to coaching, but 66% of CEOs do not receive feedback from outside consultants. Seeing this need at the C-Suite and senior management level, Pete Taft, Founder and CEO, and Susan Nicholas, Managing Principal created ClearPoint with a singular focus on improving the ability of leaders to communicate effectively in today’s information-saturated, 24/7 environment.

ClearPoint’s proven techniques draw on research and on its leaders’ years of coaching experience. “The research confirms what I’ve seen over the years,” says Taft. “Your face, your voice, the way you walk into a room all send messages. The leaders with the most ‘presence’ are the ones who have learned to control what and how they communicate. The techniques are simple, and they work. But they take practice.”

ClearPoint’s Taft and Nicholas have held significant business leadership positions where they saw firsthand this connection between leadership and communication.

Taft is co-founder and CEO of ClearPoint’s sister company, Taft and Partners, an award-winning PR, branding, and marketing firm. He is also founder of PharmApprove, a regulatory communications consultancy to the pharmaceutical industry. In his 30-year career as a writer and communications executive, Taft has coached hundreds of business leaders, scientists, politicians, and public officials in the art and science of effective communications.

Before launching ClearPoint, Nicholas built a distinguished resume in the C-Suite as CEO of several international multi-brand, multi-channel public and private companies, including TAG Heuer NA. She has mentored and coached countless managers and executives in increasing their confidence, self-awareness, and maximizing their potential. She earned her MBA with Distinction from the Wharton School.

ClearPoint offers courses, clinics, and coaching, each customized to a client’s need. Among the new division’s signature offerings:

  • The Leadership Lab, which blends overview sessions, small group clinics, and one-on-one coaching to build awareness across the organization and foster demonstrable change in every participant
  • The Write Stuff, an intensive three-part course designed to help small groups, teams, or larger divisions (up to 30 people) learn the tools, tricks, and techniques of writing with greater clarity, precision, and impact
  • EnvisionIt, an intensive communications audit that assesses a company’s vision, mission, and positioning against its competitive landscape

“Whether in the Boardroom, before the press, or in critical one-on-one discussions, leaders need the skills and confidence to engage and influence others, foster trust, and ultimately, deliver superior performance,” says Nicholas.

Fortunately, these are skills executives can improve almost right away. Says Taft: “It’s a matter of practice. You can become a better communicator by learning a few simple strategies, and the payoff in leadership effectiveness is huge.”

Finding Growth in Difficult Times: Taft and Partners & PharmApprove™ Expand

PRINCETON, NJ – February 1, 2012 – Following another year of unprecedented growth, Taft and Partners and its pharmaceutical division, PharmApprove™, are proud to announce an expansion in both staff and workspace. Co-owners Pete Taft and Mara Connolly have managed to buck the trend in a declining economy by doing what many suggest during a downturn, but not all companies implement:  Investing in new leadership to grow and evolve the two divisions of their business. The risk has paid off for the owners, the staff, and their clients.

The investment has resulted in a more than 20% growth in revenues, a 25% expansion in staff, and an over 100% expansion of physical space in 2011. Now, both organizations have moved to a new 4500 sq. ft. facility featuring a state-of-the-art video conferencing system that allows them to work more efficiently with their clients around the country, and around the world.

Taft and Partners (“Taft”) is a boutique advertising and marketing agency offering integrated marketing solutions in print, digital, radio, TV, and social media for clients across a variety of industries, including healthcare, education, consumer products, pharmaceutical, and life insurance.

The firm took a major leap forward in 2009 when it hired Christopher Cavanaugh, a seasoned advertising and marketing leader from New York, to serve as its President. Working closely with the partners, Christopher drove the growth strategy that resulted in an immediate and unprecedented boom in the firm’s advertising, marketing, and PR accounts.

Taft is currently working with international clients in the healthcare space, such as Abbott Labs; and regional entities like Capital Health, which has designated Taft as their agency of record for a majority of service lines.

PharmApprove™ is a strategic regulatory communications group supporting drug, device, and biologic development teams deliver key messages to regulators and advisory panels in the U.S. and abroad. That division took a similar leap forward last year when the partners hired Laurie Smaldone, MD, as President.

Laurie, an oncologist and former head of global regulatory at Bristol-Myers Squibb, has since developed a strategy that is expanding not only the company’s services, but its international reach as well. PharmApprove™ is proud of its team of pharmaceutical industry experts who work across all disease areas. In the first two months of 2012 alone, PharmApprove™ is working on half of the upcoming product approval meetings listed on FDA Live.

While both organizations’ recent growth has been rapid, the seeds of change were planted more than five years ago at the firm’s former, smaller offices on Palmer Square. “We recognized back then that we had to bring on top talent to fuel our growth,” says CEO and Managing Partner Pete Taft. “So we raised the bar, imagined our future, and invested in the best and the brightest. Christopher, Laurie, and the staff they have helped us assemble have done a fantastic job, and we’re looking forward to more years of growth together.”

“The expansion of both our physical space and our staff will allow both Taft and PharmApprove™ to deepen relationships with our clients and serve them better as they continue to expand globally,” adds EVP and General Partner Mara Connolly. “We foresee more revenue, higher profits, happier clients, and a pair of even more vibrant organizations in 2012 and beyond.”

Trenton Area Soup Kitchen Tops 50% of Endowment Campaign Goal

For more information, contact:

Trenton, NJ – March 17, 2011 – The Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK) has accumulated $1,071,000 towards its Keeping the Bowl Full Endowment Campaign goal.

TASK’s Keeping the Bowl Full Endowment Campaign strives to have a total of $2,000,000 in endowment gifts by December 2012, which will mark the 30th anniversary of TASK.

Currently, government funding accounts for less than 5% of the TASK operating budget. As a result, TASK relies on private donors to cover 95% of its operating costs to provide critical services. In just under a year, TASK has accumulated a total of $1,000,000 for the Keeping the Bowl Full Endowment Campaign through sound fiscal management, the success of the ‘TASK Force Against Hunger’ Campaign and the continued support of the community-at-large. Importantly, TASK received $71,000 in the initial silent phase through various leadership gifts and extensive board and staff participation. TASK is now beyond the critical halfway point for the campaign goal.

The Keeping the Bowl Full Endowment will serve as a permanent savings account for the organization. Earmarked for investment, the funds will provide critical income for TASK beyond regular fundraising efforts, while also providing security for the future of the organization, and, most importantly, the people it serves.

“Giving to TASK makes everyone feel better. Who doesn’t want to help feed the hungry? It’s a very popular charity,” says Mara Connolly Taft, who, with her husband, Pete Taft, co-chairs the Endowment Committee. The Tafts also worked on the capital campaign 25 years ago to build the Escher Street facility. “In addition to the thousands of small donations that keep TASK going and for which we are profoundly grateful, now the committee is looking for a few extraordinarily generous donors whose larger endowment gifts can help provide the financial foundation for TASK in the future.”

Each year, TASK serves over 170,000 meals to the needy in the greater Trenton area, while also providing a variety of services promoting self-sufficiency, such as tutoring, individualized Adult Education Programs, hygiene kits, social work, and visual and performing arts programming.

TASK was founded in 1982 by feeding 60 hungry people in the basement of a Trenton church. Since then, the organization has grown in size and services to reach more than 2,500 people each year. TASK is honored with six consecutive four-star ratings by Charity Navigator, the leading independent evaluator of charitable organizations in the United States.

Princeton, NJ – March 10, 2011 – Pi Day, the national “holiday” celebrating the revered mathematical constant written as π, is marked in Princeton in conjunction with Albert Einstein’s actual birthday, coincidentally on March 14 (3.14). As the world’s most renowned genius, Einstein left a legacy in Princeton that continues to grow. Even today, his memorable name is attracting renewed attention to the area, as the increasing popularity of the moniker “Einstein’s Alley” indicates, referring to the part of central New Jersey that Einstein called home.

The name “Einstein’s Alley” is being used with increased frequency by NJ and regional media, government officials, real estate, chambers of commerce and business executives to brand the spirit of the five-county corridor in NJ, where innovation, research, education, business and technology thrive. “Einstein’s Alley” was first introduced eight years ago by Congressman Rush Holt to brand economic development endeavors in the region

At the request of Congressman Holt, branding expert Mara Connolly Taft, Creative Director and Co-Owner of Taft and Partners, penned the term to help spearhead Holt’s economic plans in the 12th Congressional District. Holt needed a name to call attention to his economic development summit and initiatives in 2003, and Connolly Taft proposed a new nickname for the region. Her goal was to create a name that would highlight the area’s intellectual capital, reference its strong university/research traditions, reinforce its well-educated labor force, and draw attention to the convenient location around Princeton and central NJ, halfway between Philadelphia and New York City. Connolly Taft believed that a memorable and fun name would also help link economic potential with its branding to heighten recognition and change people’s perceptions. Holt immediately recognized its value.

“Einstein’s Alley” was well received at the economic summit and buzz about the name led the media conversation about the message of the summit. Momentum continued as Holt expanded usage of the name to a nonprofit economic development initiative that would help make central New Jersey the premier destination for technology companies.

“Historically, from the Sarnoff Corporation (formerly RCA Labs) to Western Electric and Bell Labs, this area has a tradition of excellence in innovation. Today, pharmaceutical companies, biotech labs and start-ups draw on this tradition, which combined with a well-educated workforce and a superb quality of life, offer a real alternative to The Research Triangle in North Carolina, Route 128 in Massachusetts, and, even Silicon Valley,” states Connolly Taft. “There is nothing we can’t dream up, bring to life and accomplish here,” she adds. “Besides, it’s a great place to live.” She and her husband and partner, Pete Taft, and Rush Holt are neighbors in the Hopewell/East Amwell area and have served on nonprofit boards together.
